BLAR - pizza and ancient gods [Jan. 8th, 2011|12:20 pm]
Same story, different iteration.

Finally just got my 24 page 24hr comic from October formatted and posted online! Click above or click here to read it.

Obviously in something like this the drawings are not going to be totally killer, but there are a couple that I do really dig, and I also like the momentum. I'd never drawn a 'fight scene' before, so that was one of the reasons I went down this path. Also, my last 24 hour comic (2 years ago) didn't have any dialogue. I think this thing came out pretty well. Full disclosure: I did the grey tones afterwards.

Seasonal Update [Dec. 1st, 2010|04:21 pm]
Same story, different iteration.
I've been working in a comic shop for almost a year and a half. This has made me sort of bored of a lot of formalist comics. I am still interested in stories and telling them with drawings! I want to do something a little more... free. I want to have fun. So I'm gonna try that out and see what happens. My favorite thing that I can recall coming out this year might be 'The Wrong Place' by Brecht Evens... he's a young Flemish fella... great interview here by Frank Santoro: comicscomicsmag.com/2010/11/brecht-evens.html I love the layering of inks that he uses, I'd love to try that...

In one month I'm moving to Seattle to intern at Fantagraphics. I'll be staying with Annie and I'll be up there until mid April, at which time hopefully I'll be at the Stumptown Comics Fest. Then maybe Europe for a minute.
Oh, I've got a relatively new comic up over at The Rumpus: therumpus.net/2010/11/spotlight-series-sophie-yanow/

VSNQST VSNQST VSNQST [May. 1st, 2010|07:42 pm]
Same story, different iteration.
Hey ya'll!

In case you've missed it, my new 40 page comic, VSNQST is up for reading at the Top Shelf website!

I did a 60 copy first run of the print edition, and between sales at Stumptown and Comic Relief, I'm almost totally out. I'm going to do a second run as soon as I can front some money and try to get it into more shops and make it available on my website. It's 40 pages, full color, and only 6 dollars!

I often blog when I'm not at home [Dec. 6th, 2009|08:57 pm]
Same story, different iteration.
I'm visiting New York right now, and yesterday was the Brooklyn Comics Festival in NYC. What a show! It was put on by Gabe of Desert Island Comics and the fine folks of Picture Box. I briefly squatted a table next to Julia Wertz and Lisa Hanawalt, and got to meet all kinds of exciting cartoonists, like Ken Dahl, Domitille Collardey (who started Chicou Chicou which I started reading in France, and whose work I LOVE, but I didn't realize at the moment because Chicou is a group project and for some reason I never followed each of the individual cartoonists' work and thought I couldn't get any of their stuff over here). If you read French I really recommend checking the comic out, and even if you don't, the way they play with the form of comics for the internet is really exciting! It was inspiration for my 24 Hour Comic. I also met Frank Santoro, who is really an all around nice guy, and is infectiously excited about the Golden Proportion in Asterios Polyp and comics and art in general.

After the Comics Fest I went to the Death By Audio show on my lonesome. Talked to a few folks about working and living in New York, and really liked Sam Gas Can. Stayed out way too late with my friend Maya who is also visiting the city from California. Today after recovering from last night, we visited PS1, and I was thoroughly impressed by the soda pop based installation by Alex Da Corte and the plexiglass and thread installation by David Altmejd. Check that here. I was also really into the swimming pool! It was all really exciting. I'm enjoying New York. Tomorrow I head to White River Junction to see the Center for Cartoon Studies and will be crashing with Jen Vaughn.

Wow, that's a lot of links! Enjoy! It's been a while since I blogged anything and I'm going to try to draw a bit.

Lark Pien and Rina Ayuyang Booksigning at Comic Relief [Nov. 15th, 2009|09:22 am]
Same story, different iteration.

I'll be working through this! Please come down and check it out, give 'em your support. These are great Bay Area artists doing fun minicomics work for years, and a book release is an exciting thing! We're literally a block from the Downtown Berkeley Bart, so if you're in the bay area, no excuses!

APE this weekend [Oct. 15th, 2009|02:06 pm]
Same story, different iteration.

Hiya folks. I've been diligently working away on my new comic, 'Vision Quest.' Should be about 32 pages long and available to you online very soon. I also hope to have some kind of physical form available, but certainly not by this weekend! The above is a print I made about a year ago, and the idea kind of continued to grow from there. It's going to be full color, too! I'm pretty excited.

I'll be at APE this weekend with the gumpop collective. Tables 250 and 251. The other members of my crew really need to work on their internet presence. Yeesh!

At APE I'll have mini lithograph comics available, as well as copies of '5 More Minutes,' a zine about napping which I edited (and illustrated a little), and released at the SF Zine Fest.

So, I'm excited! Working at Comic Relief has been very mellow. I've been able to brainstorm and enjoy a lot of inspiration while I'm at work (reading comics). I hope to see some of you fine folks at the show this weekend!

Comic Relief [Sep. 13th, 2009|10:54 pm]
Same story, different iteration.
I graduated college! Wee!

Anyway. That was a little while ago. More importantly: I'm working at Comic Relief in Berkeley! It's the big, famous comic book store on Shattuck?Since there are/were no comic stores anywhere near me in Marin (the last good one was Ancient Dragon, gone the way of the, uh... dragon, way back in 2001) , I used to go to Comic Relief when my mom would go to the East Bay, and I would buy comics there. That, or my yearly trip with school to Ashland, OR for the Shakespeare festival (I was always stoked on the tax free comics), was generally my only comics buying outings.

Anyway, Thursday and Friday are my days off, for now, and all the other days I work closing shifts! Some day that might change, but for now it allows me to draw comics in the mornings, which I enjoy (I have much more willpower to cloister myself when I know that all my friends are asleep... and I have the strange advantage of being a morning person).

So come and see me. Woohoo!
